Welcome
Welcome to another school year at Jerusalem! I am very excited to work with the students as we grow and learn together this year.
Communication
Communication is very important between the parent(s) and the teacher. Since we are a team working together for your child(ren), please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you have via email, my cell phone, or the school office. After school I am available between 3:00-6:00 pm. That contact information is listed at the end of this note. During the school day it is best to reach me by email or text. I will also be sending you information every week in the weekly school note.
Homework
Homework is meant for students to practice and apply skills and strategies they have already learned in the classroom. If your child is having difficulty with homework, please contact me if the student needs additional instruction and/or practice. Students will receive a home folder which they will use to bring home school work, school notes, and other forms of communication. Please check this folder daily. Some homework students will receive this year will consist of:
In the rare occurrence that your child’s homework was not able to be completed (family emergency, illness, etc.) please send me a written note, email, call, text, or stop into the classroom. If homework is consistently incomplete, you will be contacted for a conference.
Yellow/Red Cards
If a student fails to complete an assignment on time, the student will receive a yellow card. The card will indicate the date, the name of the incomplete assignment, and the reason for the yellow card. If your child receives this card, please sign it at the bottom and check with your child that the assignment is complete. On the following school day, the child should turn in the completed assignment and the signed yellow card. The student will then receive a 10% grade deduction. If a student fails to hand in the incomplete assignment, he/she will receive a red card. Parent should sign the card and check that the assignment is complete. When the red card and completed assignment is handed in, the student will receive a 0 on the assignment. The point of using the cards is to increase communication with the parents, teach the students that completing assignments is required, and continuously help the students with organizational skills.
Absences
If your child is ill or absent for any reason, please contact the school office or me ASAP. My contact information can be found at the end of this packet.
Homework for students who are absent may be picked up in the classroom or office after the school day is complete, or it will be sent home the following school day.
Grading
Grades 3 & 4 follow a letter based grading system, using a percentage chart established by Jerusalem Lutheran School. All progress reports and report cards will use the letter grade system. I will also continually assess students both formally and informally using checklists, rubrics, and other forms of assessment. Grades are available online through the online system, Power School.
Management Policies
All classroom rules and procedures will be explained, modeled, and reviewed throughout the school year. Each child will know what is expected of him/her in the classroom. If there are problems in the classroom, they will be dealt with immediately. This is done with the utmost love and concern not only for the student(s) involved, but it is also done to maintain a productive, learning environment.
This school year we will be using a color card (green-yellow-red) system to help students monitor their behavior. Each day all children will start on a green card. If a student has difficulty following the rules of the classroom, the teacher will turn the card to yellow. This will serve as a warning to the child to change his/her behavior. If the student’s behavior improves, the card will be turned back to green. If bad behavior continues, the teacher will turn the card to red. At that point, the child will have a time-out and speak to the teacher about his/her behavior.
Continued behavior problems during the school day will result in parent-teacher conferences and a meeting with the principal. If you have questions or concerns about your child’s behavior, please feel free to contact me.
Classroom Rules
